Divya Delhi:   Oral narratives evolve over time. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves has multiple variants, like many Indian epics. Thus, the latest picture about a beautiful princess and a terrible queen is expected, especially because the apparently "woke" version reflects the American film industry, if not consumers. In summary, this re-telling had to happen – and the unpleasant reaction to it too. As the new ‘live action’ Snow White, minus any little people in the title but in the film, is heading apparently to a disastrous box office run in its home market and around the world, it is not farfetched to speculate that it is because the ‘new’ version ignores the core viewership—children—and the fact that folk tales' enduring popularity lies in their focus on timeless universal virtues rather than ever-changing political predilections The film’s makers and backers clearly also forgot that youngsters are not naturally racist or woke and so do not decide what they like or do not like based on those two grounds. Unless a worried parent, teacher, or other adult pointed it out, millions of youngsters across generations who have watched the original movie and hummed the songs—including this writer—did not see Snow White as different from them.
