Unlike the two-month transition period, the newly elected President will take office immediately. He was elected to fill the vacancy left by martial law's overthrow of former President Yoon Suk Yeol in December Lee won 49.3% over PPP challenger Kim Moon-soo's 41.3% in the highest presidential election turnout since 1997. The Liberal Party candidate won South Korean elections, rejecting the military regime. During his campaign, Lee focused on strengthening South Korean democracy. He must unite the nation and construct a crisis after six months of turmoil. Former human rights lawyer Lee Jae-Myung is 61. The new South Korean president was born into a poor farming family in a distant mountain village. As a child, he worked in chemical plants, which damaged his hearing and arm. He became a human rights lawyer and politician.
