Divya Delhi : Why would a Union Cabinet minister run in an Assembly election where his party is minor and the chief ministerial chair is off limits? After Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) food processing minister Chirag Paswan said on Sunday that he would run in the Assembly election, Bihar politicians are searching for an answer. It's not harmless political bravado. Look at how he recovered from a dismal political scenario after his father, Ram Vilas Paswan, died and his uncle and other party MPs deserted him. The 42-year-old leader is wise for his age. What's he doing? He was evasive when I asked him about Assembly election rumors a few weeks ago. His party colleagues thought it would boost the party's prospects, he claimed. Possibly but not compelling. The NDA is crowded in Bihar. Since the Bharatiya Janata Party and Janata Dal (United) are expected to seek 100 seats apiece, only 35-40 seats in the 243-member Assembly would be available for NDA constituents. Rashtriya Lok Morcha, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), and Paswan's LJP are included. Paswan would obtain a majority of these seats, but not enough to pursue his political ambitions. The LJP says Paswan will run as a general, not a reserved. He wants to grow his party beyond the 6% Paswan votebank. It's more than it seems. To understand why Nitish Kumar is scared of Paswan's Bihar actions, look back 20 years.
