Divya Delhi : Indian citizens in the US on temporary visas should not exceed their lawful stay, according to the US Embassy in India. According to the embassy, overstaying could result in expulsion and a lifetime prohibition on reentering. The embassy tweeted: "If you remain in the United States beyond your authorised period of stay, you could be deported and face a permanent ban on traveling to the US in the future." Tourist, student, and work permit holders in the US should follow the validity period given at arrival, according to the advise. Immigration officials issue an I-94 form (Arrival/Departure Record) upon entrance, which lists the length of a person's legal stay in the US. Even a brief overstay might have legal ramifications, the embassy said. Long-term intentions to study, work, or reconcile with relatives in the US could be derailed by a permanent ban. The embassy also recommended those with unavoidable delays in leaving the country to contact USCIS immediately to request a valid extension.
