Divya Delhi: With his  night Truth Social declaration, "there will be no exceptions," US President Donald Trump restarted his personal and political conflict with BRICS. Trump announced a 10% tariff on "anti-American policies," starting Round 2 of an ideological and geopolitical conflict. His imprecise, unsupported assertion follows a familiar script: make noise, threaten, and punish economically to reestablish US dominance. But the world Trump imagines—where countries tremble at the mention of American tariffs—is fading fast. Western experts formerly called the BRICS alliance a "talk shop" or "paper tiger," but it is maturing. It's responding to activities like this. Economic nationalism is nothing new for Trump. In his first term, he used the same strategy against China, the EU, and even friends Canada and Japan. While he made some compromises, his trade war with China damaged global supply networks, raised inflation, and cost American consumers. It failed to reshore US production or curb China's ambitions. Using the same hammer against BRICS is obsolete and unhelpful. Trump may have accelerated de-dollarization more than any summit or policy document by threatening BRICS with a 100% tariff six months ago if they challenged the dollar's primacy. His latest move—a 10% tariff across the board—will undoubtedly aggravate economic divisions. Ironically, every time Trump lashes out, BRICS gets braver and more countries join.
