Divya Delhi: A special NIA court convicted three people to 10 years of hard labor for the 2019 Gangpur bombing. Local Trinamool Congress leader Bablu Mondal is one of the three convicts punished by the NIA court. His two sons, Mrityunjay and Niranjan Mondal, who remain missing, got the same penalty. Simultaneously, each of the three convicted was fined Rs 10,000. All three were convicted by the special court last. The blast occurred at Bablu Mondal's Gangpur home on September 20, 2019. The blast was so strong that the roof blew off and the house fell.Fortunately, no one was home at the blast, so there were no casualties.The police began the investigation, detained the three suspects, and filed charges against them. But they got the bail. Bablu Mondal's sons fled after being bailed out.The NIA took over the case and re-arrested Bablu Mondal when the Calcutta High Court ordered it. In September 2022, the central investigative agency submitted a chargesheet to the NIA special court.The NIA said in the chargesheet that Bablu Mondal's home had large explosives to incite political terror. The NIA court recorded 28 witnesses' statements during the trial.Birbhum district has often made headlines for recovering bombs.
