Divya Delhi: Local elections cannot precede national elections, according to the Bangladesh Election Commission. According to local media, key political parties in Bangladesh were fighting over which election to hold first. One Bangladeshi Election Commissioner, asking anonymity, told The Daily Star, "We are also monitoring law and order. We all know police enforcement morale has been poor since August 5. Local elections should not be held when police morale is low." Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said last week, "We're not considering municipal elections. Phased local elections are common. Starting local elections now will make it nearly difficult to arrange parliamentary elections by December." The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat-e-Islami, and the Left Democratic Alliance have met with the Election Commission individually in recent weeks to demand national elections this year. However, extreme political party Jamaat e Islami sought national polls following municipal elections. Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary Mia Golam Parwar called for local government elections before the national election during a gathering. He said conspiracies are blocking reforms and fair elections. However, BNP warned the interim administration, led by Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus, and other Bangladeshi political parties not to tamper with the national elections. According to local media, the party warned that postponing national elections under the pretense of reforms would intensify protests. With the Election Commission of Bangladesh prepared for December 2025 elections, BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami appeared to split. After the fall of previous Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League government, BNP became Bangladesh's largest political party and prioritized national elections, while Jamaat supported local government elections.
