Divya Delhi: Olympian Sushil Kumar, a suspect in the death of a junior wrestler, was granted bail by the Delhi High Court. Delhi police nabbed the two-time Olympic medalist in May 2021. Only about 30 of 186 prosecution witnesses have been questioned in the past three years, they said. On May 4, 2021, Sushil Kumar and others attacked Sagar Dhankar in the Chhatrasal Stadium parking lot in New Delhi, killing him. The attack was related to Kumar and Dhankar's property dispute. Dhankar refused to leave Kumar's flat, so Kumar and his friends attacked him. The 170-page chargesheet by Delhi Police named Sushil Kumar as the main offender, claiming tensions began because Dhankar wouldn't leave the flat and rumors said Kumar scared him. Kumar fled for over two weeks before being captured in Mundka, western Delhi. He's been jailed since June 2, 2021. The conflict arose over Kumar's Model Town flat, which Dhankar had lived in. Dhankar allegedly insulted Kumar, sparking a confrontation outside the stadium. Brain damage from blunt force killed Dhankar. Main murder suspect Sushil Kumar has been granted bail multiple times. In March 2023, a court granted him four days bail for his father's funeral. He was freed on March 6-9, 2023, after posting a Rs 1 lakh bond with two sureties. He was granted bail for knee surgery from July 23-30, 2023. He returned to jail in August 2023 after each release. Sushil Kumar is a noted Indian athlete. He won bronze in Beijing and silver in London 2012.
