Divya Delhi: India promoted a “multipolar world” with the first photo of an expanded BRICS, while Russian President Vladimir Putin called for a new “order” to fight western domination. Ministry of external affairs official Randhir Jaiswal called the snapshot a “historic moment” on social media site X, formerly Twitter, as the leaders posed for the photo during Putin's Kazan summit. The BRICS now includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have applied to join, and others are interested. The group started with Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Putin has called this meeting “the largest foreign policy event ever held” and presented BRICS as a counterpoint to the western-dominated global order. He has actively courted the Global South. Moscow and ally Chinese President Xi Jinping view the platform as an alternative to Western-led multilateral organizations like the G7. 36 nations attended the three-day meeting, showing that US-led efforts to isolate Russia over Ukraine failed. Russia wants a new payment system to replace SWIFT and allow Moscow to trade with partners and avoid western sanctions.
