Bollywood's two Gulshan Kumars both contributed to Hindi cinema singing. T Series and Gulshan are a film tale waiting to happen. Gulshan Kumar Mehta, known as Gulshan Bawra in film, created great 1970s young-at-heart lyrics. His collaboration with R D Burman produced chartbusters like Sanam teri kasam, Agar tum na hote, Yeh vada raha, Kasme vaade nibhayenge hum, Jeevan ke har mod par, and Dilbar mere. The patriotic Mere desh ki dharti from Manoj Kumar's directorial debut Upkar was Bawra's greatest contribution to Hindi film. Story behind the song is intriguing. After paying homage at a shrine, lyricist Gulshan Bawra and Manoj Kumar wrote Meri desh ki dharti. Gulshan sang Mere desh ki dharti sona ugley… jawanon bhar bhar lo jholiyan… khushi as they returned to their car from the shrine. When making Upkar two years later, Manoj Kumar recounted the screenplay to Kalyanji. The issue was explained by Manoj to Gulshan at home. Gulshan Bawra sang lyrics near the shrine, which Manoj remembered. It stuck with Manoj. He thought it was a terrific idea that required improvement. The words Jawanon bhar lo jholiyan, khushi se bolo boliyan bothered Manoj. Removed from Upkar song. Meri desh ki dharti sona ugley ugle heere-moti instead. Both Kalyanji and Gulshan hesitated. One-line ‘mukhda’ was forbidden for songs. But Manoj insisted. Each screenwriter reaches a point in the story where he believes a scene may be described musically. That circumstance is described to the lyricist. This led to ‘Mere desh ki dharti’.
