Divya Delhi: The Haryana government awarded Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh 40 days parole for rape and murder. This follows a 21-day respite for the self-proclaimed godman three months earlier. Ram Rahim was released from Rohtak's Sunaria Jail on Tuesday morning and headed to Sirsa's Dera Ashram. His 14th prison release since 2017 is reported. Ram Rahim received a 20-year sentence for raping two disciples in 2017. In 2019, the Dera Sacha Sauda chief and three others were convicted of murdering journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati. Rahim received a life sentence in 2002 for murdering his manager Ranjit Singh. In May 2024, he and four others were acquitted after “tainted and sketchy” investigations. Ram Rahim was awarded 20 days parole in January and 21 days respite on April 9. He was freed from prison three times in 2022: for 21 days in February during the Punjab assembly elections, for a month in June during Haryana civic body elections, and for 40 days in October during Haryana by-elections. In October 2020, he was paroled for 40 days during the Haryana assembly elections.
