Various accounts say 18 of 60 onboard died. The crash involved PSA Airlines Flight 5342, an American Airlines small plane from Wichita, Kansas, with up to 65 passengers. Colliding as the aircraft approached the airport prompted urgent emergency intervention. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas verified on social media that there were fatalities, although the number is unknown. In a social media post, American Airlines confirmed Flight 5342 was en route from Wichita to Washington, D.C. The airline promised more updates as details surfaced. After the crash, the US Park Police, DC Metropolitan Police Department, and military searched the Potomac River for survivors. Fireboats were called by DC Fire and EMS.
