Divya Delhi : A former student and his henchman, both young law students, committed a brutal gang rape at the West Bengal Government-run South Calcutta Law College. JP Nadda, the BJP President, appointed a four-member Fact-Finding Committee including present and past MPs to investigate. The Committee's members were chosen for their professional expertise, legal, social, cultural, and demographic knowledge, and incident sensitivity. West Bengal has long been called ‘Devi Kshetra’, and women have been safe and respected in a gender-equal culture. However, under a woman Chief Minister, atrocities on women, especially young girls, are escalating, and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers are involved in many of them. Other parties and states have committed crimes against women, but West Bengal is the only state with party goon protection. These instances are notable for political party workers' continuous impunity for crimes against women. The West Bengal BJP provided a copy of the FIR that showed the offenders' identities were removed and replaced with the initials I, G, S, P, and D, which are unrelated to the main accused. Who perpetrated the crime? Since none of the accused match these initials. Monojit Mishra, known as ‘Mango’, is the main suspect.Political patronage and institutional failure enable campus sexual violence, as shown by the Law College and RG Kar Medical College rapes. The accused gained unfettered access to college spaces under the guise of keeping order in both cases. As a volunteer and staff member. Instead of protecting students, they reportedly preyed on women, using authority and intimidation to terrorize them. These incidents demonstrate the criminalization of student politics and the systemic failure to protect female students in educational institutions supposed to empower them. I detailed the RG Kar case. This shocking interference with the original complaint by unknown parties is illogical. Is the police under political pressure to cover up this horrible crime against a young woman? We were denied access to the victim for her privacy and safety, but political compulsion seemed to be at play. We were given the survivor's father's mobile number, but calls were unanswered and WhatsApp messages were transmitted without a blue tick. The girl and her family were taken to an unknown place. They may be barred from meeting with anyone and coerced by police to make power-based comments. No West Bengal college has held student body elections in eight years. But student bodies operate. TMC party members are awarded places in student, governing, and police station volunteer or official posts. These ‘volunteers’ will decide unofficially whether to file a FIR, how to settle the cases, and their legal consequences.
