Divya Delhi : An Italian appeals court has once again shortened the prison sentences for two American tourists, initially sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2019 murder of a police officer that deeply impacted Italy. Finnegan Lee Elder, who was 19 at the time of the incident, will now serve 15 years and two months for fatally stabbing officer Mario Cerciello Rega in central Rome during a failed drug transaction. His accomplice, Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth, then 18, received a reduced sentence of 11 years and four months. Although Natale-Hjorth did not wield the knife during the attack, he was involved in a scuffle with another Carabinieri officer. The case has undergone multiple hearings across various Italian courts. Initially sentenced to life in 2021, Elder and Natale-Hjorth saw their sentences reduced to 24 and 22 years respectively in 2022.
