India Speaks Strategically

Divya Delhi: Wartime indignation is easy. Not diplomacy. Given the Gaza crisis, with bombs falling, civilians dying, and world opinion fracturing, the pressure to take a moral stand might be overpowering, especially for a democracy like India, long considered as a voice for the voiceless. Some critics think India has "lost its voice," but that's not how it sounds now. Not the voice of X (formerly Twitter) diplomacy. Not always loud. It is planned, strategic, and historically molded. India was an early Palestinian supporter. In 1974, it became the first non-Arab nation to recognize the PLO. It recognized Palestine in 1988. India's story—a nation founded from anti-colonial struggle, standing in solidarity with others—was reflected in its foreign policy. India has consistently supported Palestinian civilians despite its growing defense partnership with Israel. India has sent approximately 70 metric tonnes of humanitarian goods to Gaza since the crisis began, including 16.5 metric tonnes of life-saving medical supplies in two tranches. UNRWA and the Palestinian Ministry of Health received this money directly. Still more. India sent UNRWA $5 million in 2024, matching its commitment from earlier. These funds provide education, healthcare, and emergency assistance to Palestinian refugees, many of whom have nowhere else to go.
