India's Big Move! New Law for Safe, Orderly Overseas Migration: What We Know So Far!

Divya Delhi: India is exploring a new law to ensure safe and orderly international migration after the current US deportation dispute. A framework for safe, systematic, and regular migration for abroad work is being developed. The decision comes after the US deported 104 illegal Indian immigrants, who arrive in Amritsar   onboard a C-17 US military aircraft, apparently tied and shackled.The Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor,  delivered a report in Lok Sabha ,Which resulted to the proposed "Overseas Mobility (Facilitation and Welfare) Bill, 2024." The proposed law aims to replace the 1983 Emigration Act to allow people to emigrate for abroad jobs.The commission has urged the establishment of Protector of Emigrants offices in states that lack them. It has also recommended for the fast construction of additional PoE offices in important “migration hotspots” like Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to boost outreach and provide greater support to emigrants. The External Affairs Ministry notified the Committee that the proposed draft is being reviewed by line Ministries and would be made public.The Committee wants to be consulted on the Bill's essential components and has stressed that a revised statute reflecting "changing global migration realities" should be passed within a year.
