Divya Delhi: India is the second largest fish producer, with an 8% share of world fish production. In the 2023-24 fiscal year, it exported 17,81,602 metric tonnes of seafood worth Rs 60,523.89 crore, the government stated. The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) said the export value rose from 609.95 crore in 2003-04. The Union Budget 2025-26 projected the highest ever total yearly financial support of Rs. 2,703.67 crore for fisheries. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said this shows India's leadership in aquaculture and seafood exports. Fish output climbed to an amazing 184.02 lakh tonnes (2023-24) from 95.79 lakh tonnes (2013-14) and 63.99 lakh tonnes (2003-04), indicating a growth of 88.23 lakh tonnes in 10 years (2014-24) as opposed to an increase of 31.80 lakh tonnes (2004-14). Inland and aquaculture fish output rose 77.71 lakh tonnes from 2014-24, compared to 26.78 lakh tonnes from 2004-14. The Ministry says the Blue Revolution Scheme started in FY2015-16 with a Rs 3,000 crore budget for 5 years. However, as the sector needed reforms to address critical gaps across the value chain; Thus, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) scheme was conceived in 2020 to help the fisheries sector achieve new heights while ensuring socio-economic welfare of fishers, fish farmers and other stakeholders.
