Divya Delhi: 'Illegal And Unconstitutional': AAP Moves SC Against MCD Standing Committee ElectionThe Aam Aadmi Party challenged a Municipal Corporation of Delhi standing committee election in the Supreme Court. After Delhi Chief Minister Atishi accused the BJP of “murdering” democracy and calling the September 27 election “illegal and unconstitutional”, the move was made. Since ruling AAP councillors abstained, the BJP gained the remaining seat on the MCD's 18-member standing committee unchallenged. The saffron party has petitioned the highest court for an immediate hearing on its contempt petition against Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi over the MCD standing committee election. Atishi stated the AAP will appeal the election to the SC at a news conference on Saturday (September 28). “The Constitution and laws govern the nation, not hooliganism. So the BJP should quit murdering democracy,” she said, adding that the standing committee member's election violated the DMC Act, 1957. She stated only the mayor may set the date and location for the MCD standing committee election and preside over a councillor meeting for the election.
