Divya Delhi : New York authorities said the Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtemoc, which hit the Brooklyn span on Saturday night, lost power shortly before the collision and headed toward the span. The ship broke all three masts as it hit the New York City landmark, killing two and injured 19. "At this time, of the 277 on board, 19 sustained injuries, 2 of which remain in critical condition, and 2 more have sadly passed away from their injuries," Adams said. The ship, 297 feet (91m) long and 40 feet (12m) wide, first sailed in 1982. Each year, the ship set sail after naval military school sessions to finish cadet training. The Mexican navy said that the vessel left Acapulco on April 6 this year for Iceland.New York police chief of special operations Wilson Aramboles told a press conference that the ship lost power at 8:20 pm (local time) as the captain was maneuvering it, leading it to aim for the Brooklyn bridge abutment. The vessel's 45m (147ft) masts were too tall for the arched bridge, which has a 135ft center clearance, according to the New York transport department's website.Several sailors on top of the ship were hurt when it hit the bridge, Aramboles claimed. Not sure if these sailors are killed.Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum said Saturday she was "deeply saddened" by the naval ship crash into the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two crew members.
