Divya Delhi: In an extraordinary disaster that left at least 15 people injured, military officials claimed a fighter jet bombed a civilian area in a border city Thursday due to pilot mistake. Officials said two KF-16 fighter planes "abnormally" dropped four MK-82 air-to-surface bombs each outside a training site in Pocheon, 40 kilometers north of Seoul, at 10:04 a.m. during joint live-fire drills with U.S. troops. An Air Force officer told reporters that one of the single-seat jets' pilots input the strike target coordinates incorrectly before takeoff, causing the inadvertent bombing. Due to an apparent mistake, the bombs were thrown on a village 8 kilometers from the training ground, injuring two and damaging eight buildings. The spokesman said officials are investigating whether the pilot checked coordinates properly. The insider said the probe will also look for air traffic control errors as the fighter jets swerved off their flight path due to the erroneous target coordinates. The military will cease live-fire drills until the accident's cause is determined, according to a defense ministry official. The Air Force apologized for the inadvertent airstrike and promised "all necessary" response steps, including damage compensation. The inadvertent bombing occurred during live-fire drills between Korean and U.S. troops at the training range near North Korea, involving over 160 military equipment, including tanks and fighter jets. The drills were a prelude to the partners' 11-day springtime Freedom Shield exercise starting Monday. A military official said Freedom Shield will go on as planned, but authorities are discussing on-field training alterations. onhap)
