Divya Delhi: The nation was shocked by actress Shefali Jariwala's unexpected death at 42. Shefali, known for her roles in Kaanta Laga and Bigg Boss, collapsed at her Mumbai home on June 27 and died before medical help arrived. According to a preliminary report from Amboli police, blood pressure dropped sharply. This incidence raises a serious medical question: Can a quick blood pressure decrease kill? Dr. Abhijit Khadtare, a cardiologist at Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune, says that hypotension, which is often underestimated, can be just as deadly as hypertension, especially when it drops suddenly. "Severe hypotension, a sudden drop in blood pressure, can be a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention," explains Dr. Khadtare. Blood pressure is essential for organ blood flow. When it dips below 90/60 mm Hg fast, the brain, heart, kidneys, and other organs can lose oxygen. Shock, a circulatory system failure, can result. Untreated shock can cause organ failure and death. Dehydration, hemorrhage, heart difficulties, and allergies can cause it. Shefali reportedly fasted for a religious ritual and ate refrigerated food before falling. Causes are unknown, however abrupt fasting, underlying diseases, or external factors may have contributed. Internal medicine specialist Dr. Girish Datar adds, “Fasting followed by sudden food intake, especially cold food, can sometimes trigger vasovagal responses or blood sugar and pressure disturbances in susceptible individuals. Failure of the body's compensating processes can cause rapid collapse."
