Divya Delhi: Posts on social media platform X have raised worries about India's real estate affordability crisis. Akhilesh, a technologist, told a story about his Gurugram friend who earns Rs 20 lakh but can't afford housing. The post says Akhilesh's friend earns Rs 1.2 lakh per month after taxes and deductions. He has no car, kids, or lavish lifestyle. Even still, every Gurugram home project he sees costs Rs 2.5 crore. Infinity pools, zen gardens, biometric lifts, and imported marble flooring indicate that developers are seeking luxury customers, not professionals. Many, especially young urban professionals, liked the viral post. The main point is that even the wealthiest 5% of Indians can't afford a metro city property without jeopardizing their finances. Owning a property would entail living paycheck to paycheck, with little savings or leisure time. Akhilesh continued with a bold statement: “The market is not broken. It works as intended for someone else." apid urbanization, speculative investments, and a desire for ultra-luxury property are making homeownership harder for even India's high earners.
