Divya Delhi :A24 has just acquired Checkmate, a hot feature package based on a book proposal by Ben Mezrich, whose works have been adapted into films including The Social Network and Dumb Money. In line with its new mandate to pursue projects aggressively, A24 outperformed Hollywood studios and streaming services in acquiring Checkmate.Checkmate will reunite Emma Stone and Nathan Fielder, who both appeared on the cover of the most recent issue of The Hollywood Reporter and starred in the Showtime series The Curse, should the agreements reach fruition. Fielder is attached to direct, whereas Stone, in collaboration with her spouse and business partner Dave McCary, will serve as producer under the Fruit Tree banner. The duo is also reunited with A24, which provided funding for The Curse. The book contract is reportedly nearing or has reached its conclusion, whereas the talent deals are still under negotiation.Checkmate, in typical Mezrich fashion, explores a genuine and esoteric life whose narrative may be ongoing. As per the circulating proposal, the book will examine the most significant scandal in chess history, specifically the generational rivalry between Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen and Hans Niemann, the prodigious young bad boy of chess.
