Divya Delhi:  February 27, Dhaka  This week, Dhaka University's historic Madhur Canteen has become another brutal political battleground as student organizations have protested, fought, and fought. The Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University was created by Madhusudan Dey, who was assassinated on March 25, 1971, during Pakistan's brutal Operation Searchlight. After the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina collapsed in August 2024, the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has damaged Bangladesh's student politics' reputation. Student wings of radical Islamist parties that supported an undivided Pakistan and opposed independence during the Bangladesh Liberation War have taken over Madhur Canteen, shaming freedom fighters like martyr Madhusudan Dey. After former Students Against Discrimination leaders launched a new student organization, 'Bangladesh Gonotantrik Chhatra Sangsad' (Bangladesh Democratic Students Union), several students were injured in a Madhur Canteen brawl on Wednesday. The incident reportedly injured 10 persons, including a female student. Eight injured were from private universities and two from Dhaka University. Rival organizations have called for a 'Dhaka blockade' on February 28, the day SAD and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee plan to create a new political party in Bangladesh, local media reported. They want the newly declared central committee of BGCS dissolved. Student Against Discrimination (SAD) organized the July–August 2024 countrywide protests and violence in Bangladesh that led to the coup against Hasina. Student violence has increased in Bangladesh. More than 100 students were injured in Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) violence last week.
