Divya Delhi: The Supreme Court correctly chastised the Karnataka government and film chamber for supporting free speech enemies. The Supreme Court was appalled that people who threatened violence over Kamal Haasan's movie Thug Life were not punished. The state administration said the court it had not restricted the video and would offer complete protection if the producers released it. It was encouraging that the SC not only relieved Thug Life creators but also sought punishment against threat-makers. The Supreme Court Bench, chaired by Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, heard applications from the Thug Life producer and a third party on June 19 seeking hate speech and violence rules. Haasan's claim that Kannada was "born out of Tamil" sparked controversy before Thug Life's June 5 premiere in Karnataka. Haasan was chastised by pro-Kannada groups for the comment. Despite the possibility of commercial losses from the state's non-release of the movie, he bravely refused to apologize.
