Divya Delhi: A Delhi court fined and temporarily detained a doctor for throwing rice during a 2011 murder trial, sparking black magic suspicions and delaying proceedings. Surgeon Dr. Chander Vibhas allegedly threw rice under the dais during court. The lawyers refused to proceed until the grains were removed, fearing a black magic ceremony. Thus, proceedings paused for 15–20 minutes. Court workers said the doctor behaved similarly before the hearing. Dr. Vibhas said he brought grains that had fallen in court, but he didn't explain why he was carrying rice during the session. The judge called his behavior “shocking and surprising,” especially given his education and top professional background. The defense's answer seemed unconvincing, and the court noted the interruption. The judge considered his apology and anguish but nevertheless ruled the behavior improper. On August 11, the Additional Sessions Judge ordered Dr. Vibhas to stay in detention till the court's hearing and assessed a ₹2,000 fine to the State. Before continuing conversations, lawyers gasped at the unexpected incidence and demanded cleanup. The court said such odd and inappropriate conduct have no place in legal procedures, especially from a doctor.
