Divya Delhi: Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), one of Delhi's biggest transport hubs, will close one of its four runways for an upgrade on Sunday. With the runway shut for three months, roughly 200 daily flights may be canceled or rescheduled. DIAL said it has “taken suitable precautions” to minimize disruptions. DIAL spent weeks negotiating flight slots with airlines and aviation authorities to minimize disruptions. According to The Indian Express, DIAL did not want to replicate April's runway closures and weather delays, which drew public outrage. Runway 10/28 will be closed until September 15 for necessary technical upgrades. This means the runway will be upgraded to CAT 3B with advanced Instrument Landing System capabilities so flights can land safely in low visibility. This runway currently has this capability from one end; this modification will allow it from both. Real estate says location, location, location! DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said airlines will cancel 114 flights a day and reschedule 86, an 8% flight cancellation rate, greater than the 3-3.5 percent daily average. However, runway renovation scheduling made this an effective unavoidable measure.
