Divya Delhi: The Delhi High Court refused devotees permission to perform Chhath Puja on the Yamuna riverbanks in the national capital due to contaminated water and harmful foams. The High Court received a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) contesting the ban and requesting permission to perform the Puja on the Yamuna River. Due to river water contamination, the court declined to issue any orders. A bench led by the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court warned that Puja in the river could harm health. The judge cited a recent hospitalization after swimming in contaminated water. The case was dismissed by the High Court, which noted that 1,000 alternate places had been chosen for the puja with proper preparations. The Court held that other ghats and authorized sites allow safe puja. “It will harm you greatly. The river is so filthy that dipping in may cause. A person will suffer. We can't tolerate that. The bench claimed the waterway is dirty. The court noted that the prohibition was likely issued due to Yamuna River contamination, warning that bathing in such hazardous water could make people sick.
