Cyclone Fengal updates: Chennai airport shut, IndiGo among several flights suspended ahead of landfall near Puducherry

Divya Delhi: Cyclone Fengal is predicted to hit Tamil Nadu tonight evening, affecting several flights to and from Chennai. The Chennai airport is closed until 7 pm due to heavy rain and high gusts ahead of Cyclone Fengal. IndiGo advised travelers that flights in Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tuticorin, Madurai, Tirupati, and Visakhapatnam were affected. "The current weather conditions continue to impact flights to/from Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Tuticorin, Madurai, with Tirupati and Vishakhapatnam now also affected," said the airline. X handle at Chennai Airport announced that IndiGo had halted flights due to weather. Due to bad weather, IndiGo Airlines @IndiGo6E has halted all Chennai Airport arrival and departure flights. Flights will resume when the weather improves for passenger and crew safety. The notification advised customers to check with their carriers for real-time information. IndiGo @Indigo6E 6E1412 (A320, VT-IPT) from Abu Dhabi to Chennai, scheduled to arrive at 0810 hrs, has been diverted to Bengaluru owing to severe weather at Chennai, according to the airport. For updates, passengers should contact IndiGo. The airport also recommended passengers to check flight status with their airlines because some flights had been cancelled or postponed due to weather issues. The IMD uses Doppler weather radars in Chennai (S Band and X Band) and Sriharikota to track Cyclone Fengal along with satellite observations.
