Divya Delhi: Cyclone ‘Fengal’ hit the coastline lines of Tamil Nadu-Puducherry on Saturday night, producing torrential rainfall and floods in numerous sections of Chennai and killing at least three persons. The India Meteorological Department predicted that the cyclonic storm, which produced 90 kmph winds and heavy rain, will weaken into a deep depression in the coming hours. The three fatalities included a migrant worker electrocuted while withdrawing cash from an ATM in Chennai. Later, his body was found floating nearby. Puducherry experienced 44 cm of rain, the most in 30 years, creating street flooding and disrupting daily life. The District Collector requested the Indian Army and NDRF to rescue people in many Union Territory areas due to the dire scenario. Travel advisories were issued for commuters during heavy rain due to the cyclonic storm in Tamil Nadu, which affected many flights in Chennai. Flights resumed at Chennai International Airport at 4 am Sunday after Cyclone Fengal hit. Due to the cyclonic storm, flights were canceled yesterday. The airport was chaotic for almost 12 hours before normalcy returned. A traveler said, “I arrived at Chennai airport at 6 pm. Cyclone Fengal canceled my flight. Our booked flight hasn't been answered. We spent 12 hours at the airport." Traffic barricades were blown away and people found cover as torrential rains hit Chennai. Rainwater also inundated two state-run facilities in Chromepet, a general hospital and a thoracic medicine center, which are neighboring and popular with the public.
