Divya Delhi: China has announced a new visa-free entry policy for nationals of five major Latin American countries- Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay, which will be effective from June 1, 2025. This move aims to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with the region, placing these nations on the same level as many European and Asian countries that already enjoy similar privileges. The policy is set to last for one year, was unveiled by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian during a press conference on May 15. It follows a high-profile forum in Beijing earlier that week, where Chinese and Latin American officials convened to discuss enhanced cooperation. At the forum, President Xi Jinping announced a new $9 billion credit line and fresh infrastructure investments for Latin America, signalling China’s commitment to deepening its presence in the region. Brazil, Argentina, and Chile rank among the top five economies in Latin America. By extending visa-free access to these countries, China is facilitating easier travel for businesspeople, tourists, and officials, thereby promoting increased exchanges and collaboration. This initiative aligns with China’s broader strategy to expand its global influence and foster stronger international partnerships.
