An agent assisted a group across the Jordan-Israel border. Police in Jordan shot and killed 47-year-old Thomas Gabriel from Thumba near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The Indian Embassy in Amman wrote his family about the tragedy. On February 10, Jordanian soldiers fired at him as he tried to unlawfully cross the Israel border. Per reports, Ani Thomas Gabriel's relative Metilda claimed, “We got an email from the Indian Embassy in Jordan about his death, but we haven't heard anything since.” Edison, another Gabriel companion, was shot but lived, according to accounts. Edison returned home hurt. A relative said Gabriel left home, informing his family he was heading to Velankanni, a Tamil Nadu Christian pilgrimage place. A family source told Indian Express that Jordanian authorities treated Edison for bullet wounds in a camp. He was shot at a beach and found in a security forces camp, where he was treated. He was arrested in Jordan and returned to India days later. Relatives said the other two group members are still in Jordanian jails. Gabriel and Edison were two of four trying to cross the Jordan-Israel border with an agent. Both Thomas and Edison were fisherman and autorickshaw drivers. According to media sources, all four held a three-month tourist visa to Jordan. The Jordanian army stopped them at the border, but when they fled, they opened fire. Gabriel died of a head shot, while Edison suffered a leg injury. He was treated at a Jordanian army hospital and returned to India. Gabriel's family learned about his Jordan trip after Edison returned. His death was confirmed by the Indian Embassy.
