Divya Delhi : Land subsidence akin to the Joshimath catastrophe could occur in Bageshwar, Uttarakhand, as a result of uncontrolled mining. Slope instability and water resource depletion were found to be caused by dangerous excavation operations, according to a government panel.A government panel has warned that unchecked mining poses a serious threat to the Uttarakhandi town of Bageshwar, predicting Jyotirmath-like land subsidence if prompt action is not taken to mitigate the environmental and geological harm, as reported in the news. Seismic zone V is the area with the greatest potential for earthquakes, and the committee determined that the topography in the district is particularly vulnerable to landslides and rockfalls. The committee stated that these causes caused slope instability, spring depletion, and land subsidence, which are similar to the conditions observed during the Jyotirmath collapse in January 2023. In that event, more than 800 dwellings in a geologically vulnerable zone developed fractures as a result of inadequate drainage and construction."A Jyotirmath-type crisis is in the making if the current practices continue," the committee said, adding that inefficient and onerous regulation is a result of a lack of water resource mapping and insufficient documentation of slope alterations. Recurring landslides, house cracks, deteriorating crop yields, and drying up of water supplies were observed in the Kanda-Kanyal valley, where a concentration of mines works.
