77 Violent Attacks on Indian Students Abroad in Germany and Canada in 5 Years Leading List: MEA

Divya Delhi:  In the last five years, 77 Indian students studying abroad have been violently attacked, with 40 in 2024 being the highest. Germany and Canada reported the most cases, the ministry of external relations informed Parliament. Over the previous five years, MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh reported 77 violent attacks on Indian students abroad: 40 (2024), 28 (2023), 4 (2022), 2 (2021), and 3 (2020). According to ministry data, similar attacks have occurred in 10 prominent student destinations: the UK, US, Australia, Canada, Russia, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Iran, and Philippines. Germany had 11 such events in 2024. Canada reported nine attacks in 2024, one in 2020, 2022, and 2023. The data shows four attacks in the UK and US, three in Italy, Ireland, and Philippines, two in Russia, and one in Australia last year. Russia had 12 assaults, the UK seven, the US four, and Australia two in 2023. Singh stated in a Rajya Sabha written reply that 7,60,073 Indian students studied overseas in 2024, 8,94,783 in 2023, and 7,52,111 in 2022. In 2024, some foreigners entered India on student visas. "The Bureau of Immigration keeps track of students who leave India for educational purposes as they exit through airports/land ports, including the number who said they were studying abroad," he said. The central government prioritizes protecting Indian students abroad, he added. He noted that Indian missions/posts abroad communicate with university students abroad. The minister said Indian missions/posts invite incoming Indian students in overseas colleges to welcome ceremonies. He added they also organize orientation programs to brief them on potential issues and risks and how to handle them.
